One of the leading Czech artists of his generation, the Prague-born Jakub Matuška aka Masker (b. 1981) started out with graffiti and street art and today focuses primarily on painting and drawing, occasionally crossing over into sculpture, video, installations and public interventions.
Since 2013 he has been blending his boyish, ironic and poetic reflections on contemporary urban life with an examination of his own holistic experience.
The persistent question ‘how should a person be?’ serves as the foundation for his ever-inquiring exploration into the fraught relationship between image and language, as well as between painting and drawing, and into the different capabilities these media possess in making sense of our surroundings.
More than a decade of combining traditional painting techniques, computer manipulation of handdrawn sketches and the use of an airbrush on large canvases have allowed Matuška to explore questions of flatness and depth, solid and liquid, digital and analogue, transient and eternal, symbolic and everyday, and charming and confusing, creating his own rhetoric and dismantling conceptual and formal certainties in the process.
‘Like Eulenspiegel, a joker and trickster educated by the street and equipped with an owl, a mirror, and the pea jingling in the spray can, Matuška mostly turns situations, sentences, and states against them,’ wrote Mladá fronta Dnes, the Czech national daily.
In 2010 Matuška was a finalist for the most prestigious Czech prize for young artists, the Jindřich Chalupecký Award. One year later he won the National Gallery in Prague’s 333 Award. His work has been exhibited internationally. Matuška lives

1981年プラハ生まれのヤクブ・マトゥシュカ、通称マスカーは、グラフィティやストリート・アートから出発し、現在は主にペインティングとドローイングを中心に活動、時には彫刻、ビデオインスタレーションにも取り組んでいる。
2013年からは、現代の都市生活に対する少年のような皮肉と詩的な考察を元に、自身の精神的危機の考察と融合させ「人はどうあるべきか」という執拗な問いかけは、イメージと言語、絵画とドローイングの間の危うい関係、そして私たちを取り巻く環境を理解する上で、これらのメディアが持つさまざまな能力に対する、彼の絶え間ない探求の基盤となっている。
マトゥシュカは、大きなキャンバスに、伝統的な絵画技法とコンピュータによる手描きのスケッチ、そしてエアブラシを組み合わせることで、平面と奥行き、固体と液体、デジタルとアナログ、儚さと永遠、象徴と日常、魅力的と混乱といった問題を探求し、その過程で独自のレトリックを創造し、概念的・形式的な確信を解体してきた。
「マトゥシュカはティル・オイレンシュピーゲルのように、路上で教育され、フクロウ、鏡、ジャラジャラ鳴るスプレー缶を装備したジョーカーでありトリックスターである。そのような彼は多くの場面や文章で国家を敵にまわしている」とチェコの国営日刊紙『Mladá fronta Dnes』は書いている。
2010年、マトゥシュカはチェコで最も権威のある若手アーティスト賞、ジンドリッチ・チャルペッキー賞の最終選考に残り、その1年後プラハ国立美術館の333賞を受賞。彼の作品は国際的に評価されている。プラハ在住。
